If it a POP email used by two devices turn one off then try to access your mail again. This happens to me once on a while when retrieving email from a POP account on a computer. If I turn my phone off it releases it and viola! You've got mail. Then turn cell back on. Not a perfect fix which would be to dump the POP account but it works for me on the rare occasion that I get that lovely message.
