How do I retrieve old text messages?

If you have an old backup of the device with the text message you wish to retrieve you could restore to that backup. However, I think you'll lose the text messages you have received since that backup if you go that route. If you don't have a backup then I don't think you'll be able to retrieve your old text messages.
