How much memory does the Mac Pro 1,1 address? I'm going to be stuck on the 32bit OSX Lion and am about to drop in 8GB of RAM in my Mac Pro 1,1. How much of the RAM will my Mac Pro 1,1 address? Just curious, as I know that 32bit Windows only addresses 2.9 GB of RAM at the most.

OK. That helps. Think you'll want to determine if Lion has a 64-bit kernel and drivers that works with your system hardware, etc.

According to this, it's a 32bit kernel- "Darwin Kernel Version 11.4.2: Thu Aug 23 16:26:45 PDT 2012; root:xnu-1699.32.7~1/RELEASE_I386 i386". Since all of my software and hardware works with the 32 bit kernel, I see no reason to boot into the 64 bit kernel.

I was just curious to know if there was a similarity between how a 32 bit Windows has the 2.9GB memory limitation and if Mac OSX 10.7.5 running on my First Gen Mac Pro, might have a similar limitation with the OS running in 32bit mode. If so, then that is a reason to start with the 64 bit kernel by pressing 6 and 4 at boot. I will make that attempt after the RAM arrives and is installed, next week.

I see. I'm somewhat familiar with the 32-bit OS limitations on Windows. Not so much for older OS X versions. Hope your upgrade plans go well.
