Help bypassing Activation on Vzw iPhone 5 with no sim

Have a phone I wish to use as just an ipod that I purchased from a friend it has no sim and was completely reset. Tried looking online and on youtube but there is no option to do that vmail trick on latest version of iOS 7 on verizon version. Would love some help and thank you!

Unless I'm missing something, the phone will still attempt to activate via Apple, and has nothing to do with VZW. I am assuming the device is not registered or has no current service plan with VZW.

Device is not activate on any acct it is used. It simply has no sim card and won't get past the starting screens because it says "Sim Required" figured there was a way to bypass it being there was on all previous generations of iOS.
