how are heartbeats and taps sent from apple watch as a imessage or as date

my husband and I received Apple watches for Christmas and were worried that when sending heartbeats and sketches that it was using data and not imessage can this be clarified.

iMessage uses data. The Apple Watch will either use your phones data or wifi network that the phone is connected to.
