Running with Apple Watch...Need my phone?

Just curious, I haven't pulled the trigger yet on buying one. I know the watch and iPhone communicate to use apps, etc. If I went running and left my phone at home, would the watch still be able to track the distance, pace, stuff like that? Or would I have to have the phone as well?

Thanks

Yes, but.

It doesn't have a GPS chip, so apparently you need to take your phone with you a few times for it to learn your stride, etc.

You will need to run a few times with the Apple Watch and iPhone, so it can calculate your pace, stride, etc. Then you can run with just the watch and it will be fairly accurate.
