Podcasts and Apple Watch without iPhone?

Any sense whether the Apple Watch can play podcasts during workouts when it is away from an iPhone? It seems like it has some independent music storage and playback but I was not sure about podcasts.

Podcasts are all I listen to when I run outside so this is an important feature to me.

Everything the watch does depends on the phone now...

Revise to add... there will be some space so as to not need a phone all the time...

I would imagine Podcasts downloaded to your watch would play, just as music will. They're just audio files.

There is a music app on the watch and it does say you can download a play list. But there is no podcast app on the watch so I am just not sure if can listen to that type of audio. The Podcast app and Music app are separate on the phone as well so that makes me wonder if you can do podcasts. A related question - how about audio books like audible?

Podcasts and audible books are all things I can do now with a many year old iPod Nano. So I would hate to lose that functionality.
