Presently a there are some select AppleTV "channels"/apps that have contents that are available via monthly subscriptions... others that require authentication using credentials via a cableTV service you already subscribe to... and still others that are totally free.

AppleTV is a device, not a service. You buy the device and use it for whatever you want. There are rumors of a future Apple streaming service but nothing concrete as of yet.

Agreed with you and what i believe there is no direct fee related to use of AppleTV.
