Using AT2 remote with ATV1

I just got the ATV1 because I don't have an HD TV so the ATV1 hooked up just fine.
My daughter just gave me the new version of the remote that comes with the ATV2.
I'll be darned if I can get it to work.
Do I have to un-pair the original ATV1 remote then pair the ATV2 remote or am Ijust having a Seniors moment?

The remote should work with any Apple TV or Mac. You probably do have to unpair the original remote, however, as it may "lock" to that one.

I un-paired the original remote and ATV2 seems to work fine
