    Default Network media

For apple tv to play movies from you computer does your media have to be in iTunes? Or can it play from networked servers?

Currently I have an xbox that I use for media streaming. All of my DVDs are stored on my server and play over play on for streaming to my phone netbooks and xbox etc.

Just curious how this would work on apple tv, I want one seems more flexible than my current setup. It will take up less space and will free up $15 a month lol

They'd have to be in iTunes for Apple TV to see them, that's what handles the "Home Sharing" protocol it uses to identify sources. Also have to be in Apple TV-friendly format, H.264.

Of course if Apple TV is jailbroken, who knows?

I have a similar question. What about NAS devices with built in iTunes Servers? More specifically, a Synology Disk Station. Here's another link.
