Why have my delete photos migrated from my iPhoto to Photos on my iPad?

Delete photos migrated from iPhoto to Photos on iPad

I have thousands of photos that migrated from iPhoto to Photos on my iPad. I want to delete many of them, though not all. Photos does not give me the option to delete these. How do I get rid of them, or am I stuck with them forever?
