Hmm- my guess is you or someone who is afraid to tell you dropped it. Unless it's abused in some way an iPad can't break apart on its own

It's possible a battery issue. They have been known to expand on rare occasion. I would definitely have it looked at, it could potentially be a hazard.

I would think that it's more than likely a drop. OP you didn't give specifics such as which iPad or where it's coming apart.
You could take it to an Apple store and see if a repair is something you might consider.
