I'm not trying to start another "discussion". Just happened across this on Techcrunch about a Kickstarter project to add an LED notification light and thought those who wanted one might like to back the project.

Interesting ... and a feature I miss from my BlackBerry days.

The video does not mention SMS however. Just emails, calls, and social media. Without SMS alerts, I would not buy it. I *know* I have a mail waiting - I get 20 or 30 a day so it is a given. SMS on the other hand, are usually something I need to know about sooner than later.

I don't necessarily miss it, but I still wouldn't mind having an LED notification AND the option to disable it.

I do like having the LED notification, I am after all an old school BlackBerry user
But I thought with iOS 6 there was an option in accessibility to use the flash as an LED. For notifications, no? Of course using that would mean having your device face-down most of the time.

It is there, as a part of the "accessibility" feature set... but it’s a very rough kludge, at best.

As stated above by Fausty82, there is a Notification feature under Accessibility, and again he is correct. Kludge is a very good word for it. It only lights up when the message comes in, and it looks a bit like a lightning strike in a dark room. But it is a one-and-done alert.

If you wanted to get SUPERkludgy here's another idea: if you use the led for alerts but never for photos (I hate how flash shots look) you could try covering the flash with a piece of colored film to reduce the blinding aspect.

I do not advocate this though on the grounds that it would look ridiculous.

I don't either. I never used it on my BBs.

If you have notifications set up to show on the lock screen, tapping the home button will show you what you've missed. When my phone is locked and I get something I have set up to show in the lock screen, the phone turns on for a few seconds as an alert. That's the only alert I need.

As for the taping thing, it would work but I'd be scared about adhesive on my phone lens or flash making the photos fuzzy.

coming from a BB, I do love the LED, not sure about this accessory. Different, but good idea. I have the LED notifications on my SG3, but will get used to it on the next iphone.

What this Kickstarter thing is is bringing something Blackberry-esque for a blinkie-light as an aftermarket accessory.
