I have never owned a Macbook and was looking into the new Macbook (12 inch) and wanted to know how well it does for programmers?

I don't know, but I'd like to think that it will be sufficient for programmers.

It should be fine. I use an older Air model that's probably same or less power and the high end Retina 15. Both have all I need for running the tools I use as an IT professional including running a Windows VM. I really only need the power my high end laptop has for video editing and doing a lot at once with both the guest and host OS.

This might be a different story if your work is on demanding applications.

It's great. You can code anywhere because of it's form factor and battery life is excellent.

I love mine. Java and Scala projects with Gradle builds. Vim and Atom as my editors. Linux VMs. I don't miss the speed, but I love the size, weight, and screen. I find myself sitting next to my Mac Pro and working on the rMB by choice.

(But rMB + tmux session on the Mac Pro is also very sweet.)
