It should be fine. I use an older Air model that's probably same or less power and the high end Retina 15. Both have all I need for running the tools I use as an IT professional including running a Windows VM. I really only need the power my high end laptop has for video editing and doing a lot at once with both the guest and host OS.
This might be a different story if your work is on demanding applications.
I love mine. Java and Scala projects with Gradle builds. Vim and Atom as my editors. Linux VMs. I don't miss the speed, but I love the size, weight, and screen. I find myself sitting next to my Mac Pro and working on the rMB by choice.
(But rMB + tmux session on the Mac Pro is also very sweet.)
